Intra-Afghan Talks; a Futile Exercise

Putting a glance at the political outlook of Afghanistan, chaotic state of delusion is reflected. The incumbent government sticks to push for futile peace talks whilst insurgents resorted to parallel bloodletting. Kabul witnessed several explosions and suicide attacks in the wake of winter security setbacks that have worried many as the April elections draw nearer and foreign troops continue to pack up ahead of the deadline of withdrawal in December. Earlier as a result of Taliban ambush on an army outpost, Twenty Afghan soldiers were killed in Ghazi Abad district of Kunar province sharing a border with Pakistan that has been the site of insurgent activity targeting Afghan forces' outpost.

We are peace seekers. We stick to peace even at the cost of our national pride dignity, and wellbeing. We negotiate peace, even with the assassins of humanity, peace and tranquility. This very stance is stressed by both head of government and political leadership of Afghanistan with variant degree of assertion. Awfully peace is talked to those who have killed over hundred thousands of innocents and physically impaired even a multiplied number since the beginning of war launched against terror. The extremists’ pretend to talk but they are incognizant to sanctity of humanity and peace and strongly believe in division of human being of variant grounds, be that ethnic, sectarian and religious. There are hundreds of such clues that manifest the persecution of guiltless civilians at the hands of Taliban.

If peace were to be installed via negotiation it was better to be thought of earlier so that the loss of thousands of innocents and infrastructure worth of billion dollars would be averted. Having travelled a distance of thirteen years in a fight against terrorism, a sudden shift in the strategy emboldens insurgents and designates their victory.

Even if talks were to be used as a last resort to install peace then some serious breakthrough must have worked out that could soothe the insurgents to an agreeable demand prior to sitting. The most significant were the exposure of shift instilled in Taliban’s resolve to disband militancy, dissociate Al-Qaida and surrender to constitution of the country. This move practically is unachievable given that Taliban deem to having upper hand in the fight, never surrender to government’s demands instead they will ask the government to serve the sacrificial goat and fulfill their demands in order to earn their confidence.

On the other extreme the narrow version of Islam they follow doesn’t let others to get along due to excessive restrictions and limited freedom promised. Anybody owing rational views that contradict their version of Islamic jurisprudence is branded infidels and worthy of capital punishment and persecution. If the same temperament is maintained subsequent to successful reconciliation then it would harden governmental proceedings and rule of business, is another important issue that draws attention.

They deem themselves the noblest of men, and are emboldened to eliminate vices, evil practitioner in order to perish falsehood. Any act that doesn’t match their interest is labeled antireligious and is enough to serve the basis for mayhem. They deem themselves God’s reflection empowered to punish anybody whom they find having deviated from the path they interpret just.

Irrespective of a hard stance opted by the Taliban, the government leaning forth to further talks seems the degree of its interest to work out a feasible solution to reverse the growing cause of terrorism, seems to be a momentary than eternal solution to the issue.

Reconciliation and peace are the ultimate necessity every Afghan longs for over decades. In order to draw in the stalled peace process, a tangible and pragmatic approach is required to further the derailed peace process. Taliban and Afghan government has been in state of war for over decade that have resulted in devastative causalities and irreparable harms to war torn country. It is contemplated to work out a peaceful solution to ongoing conflict to put an end the bloodshed. Afghanistan has always expected US or Pakistan to help them furthering peace talks with Taliban who positively responded to the call of afghan government.

Both Pakistan and US, keeping their promises, inaugurated a political office of Taliban in Qatari capital Doha – the display of positive note facilitating intra-Afghan talks. In the bid to further peace talks seemingly Pakistan has contributed by releasing several Afghan Taliban inmates with inclusion to Mulaah Bradar, the second commander of Taliban after Mullah Omar. Moreover, the gradual release of Taliban detainees is a positive gesture that Pakistan’s cooperation with Afghan government will continue. It has been the latest push to break a stalemate in Afghan reconciliation process. The Pakistani head of government Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif reiterated its unconditional support to afghan led peace process in the trilateral summit formerly held in Ankara Turkey his support for the Afghan peace process at a joint news conference. However, Afghan government doubts both US and Pakistan for derailing peace talks instead of furtherance.

Recently the rumors of intra-Afghan dialogue surfaced that was denounced by Afghan Taliban spokesman Shahidullah Shahid. This development is ascertained by credible Taliban ex-minister while talking to Pakistani based outlet Express tribune. Demonstrating a shift from their earlier stance, dozens of senior Afghan Taliban leaders have reached to decision to move for holding a dialogue with President Hamid Karzai to reach a political solution for Afghanistan following withdrawal of foreign troops by the end of this year.

This is the first time a senior Taliban leader has publicly announced to hold talks with the Karzai regime and begin the intra-Afghan dialogue. It will be premature to expect much from this process, but it could win support in and outside Afghanistan in view of the drawdown.

Reportedly the Taliban senior leaders organized a meeting in UAE discussing a congenial solution to Afghan rift. The meeting of Taliban leaders intimates Taliban realizing the need for a peaceful of solution in ending up rifts which serve not afghan’s interest. According to reports Dubai meeting was attended by former Taliban cabinet ministers, four senior diplomats and top military commanders who had been involved in fighting foreign forces. This should be noted that peace can only be installed if Taliban unconditionally accepts withholding human and when right and Afghan constitution intact. Practically it seems not achievable.

The problems are numerous; our leaders either by design or threat are unable to denounce the murderers of humanity, instead offering unconditional peace talks. Many simply did not have the spine to point a finger at the terrorist group, some name them their misled brothers that they are now apparently in thrall to; a group that has killed hundreds of thousands of their fellow countrymen over the years, the stakeholders that have driven a stake through the national heart without a word of demurral from those who now seek conciliation. A group that is able to demand, probably with a reasonable degree of confidence, the release of men dedicated to the overthrow of the democratic state. The world national reconciliation might sound great if insurgent are successfully disarmed and made law abiding citizens else it render a futile exercise and waste of time money.
