We are not What We Appear

We are not What We Appear

It is one of the most dominant inclinations of our society that we must not appear what we are. It is actually the pressure of the society that compels us for such meaningless act. From our appearance we seem very much happy but from within our personality we are really broken and may be suffering from agony. It is really not clear why we have accepted such cruel pressure of the society on ourselves.

We are not really blissful, but we do not have the courage to appear unhappy. We might be in troubles – we may not have paid the rent of the house for the last three months and may be suffering from financial problems, but our thoughts and our ideas are not very much different from those of the rich people. Our social and political opinions are the same as that of the rich. We may be so much deprived that we are dispossessed of even the inferiority complex. This negligence of once truth and reality and this much pressure on psychology is nothing else except the stress of the society.

And then there is a person who may seem very much contented with his wife and his marital life and may be praising his wife all the time but in reality both may be very much displeased with one another. They, both, may want to fight one another but in the company of others they may try to appear as ideal wife and husband. This does not mean that wife and husband must fight all the time but it is necessary that they must express their feelings of both love and anger with each other and try to live a natural and better life.

Among my friends, I see one of them who may be very much dejected and low and but I also see that he has shaved and made his hair. I would not be surprised if he had done so to show his inner bliss but unfortunately he has done so only to show to the people that he is not depressed and he is very lovable and charming. I want to tell him that if he is really feeling dejected, it is not a crime. He has the right to be so, as it is one of his natural feelings. He needs to appear what he is, not what he is not. He is a very normal person, not an actor and life is not a drama; therefore, he needs to live to be himself.

Through these words, I do not want to lead anyone astray. Actually, this sort of attitude has puzzled me as well and I want that human beings must learn how to live to be themselves. They must not lie to others and most importantly to themselves. If they live the way the society wants them to live, they cannot be anything more than puppets. And if they want to change the standards and the way the others think, it is necessary to learn how to say ‘no’ as well.

This must not be understood from the words written above that we must be unhappy. They actually mean that we must have true happiness. The true happiness is felt by the entire existence of the human being. It is not limited to the face or to the appearance but it penetrates within the heart and soul and they start dancing with vigor and agility. However, the social setup that we have made for ourselves mostly promotes anger, hatred and sadness. And, especially, the sadness has saddened the human hearts and the tragedy can be felt from the heartbeats – they have become dim and lifeless. The laughter they laugh does not belong to them – it is a usual practice of the jaws and throat, which on most of the occasions is controlled so as to appear civilized. The real laughter originates from the heart and reaches to every pore of the body and makes the human body relax.

It is really important for us to recognize our true self and must feel no hesitation and shame in representing the same to the people. The social setup that we live in wants to turn us into robots that are programmed by the social circumstances and that do not have the capacity to make their own decisions. Whatever, it gives as output is not much distant and different from what is put into it.

Pride in being what a person is, is really important for the personality development. It helps a person in getting rid of different sorts of depressions and tensions. A person, then, does not have to tell lies and does not have to wear different faces on his face. He does not have to be hypocrite and does not have to live an artificial life – a life that does not belong to him and does not portray his true self.

It is really an insult to the nature and to the miraculous existence if a person does not like being what his really personality is. A person exists to portray himself not others in his life; the concept can be best described in what Jean Paul Sartre had said, “Hell is other people”.
