Afghanistan’s Political Syndrome

Afghanistan’s Political Syndrome

An emerging social fragmentation is possible in a country which has seen three decades of war and violence. The present social disorders, political crisis and economic stagnation are some vital factors which may lead the country to a calamity. This chronic problem has debilitated the country and its social fabric. .Our social and political institutions have entirely crumbled and degenerated due to this chaos. An ominous shadow darkens the country more than ever before. Indeed, the three decades of war caused a great havoc in Afghanistan which has left our politicians in confusion. Therefore, it is believed that Afghan officials will have to be on their toes. The political elites need to think of effective ways of improving the situation.

Political struggle is not only going on amongst the political candidates for office but also exists amongst some of the countries that have a stake in the economic and political prospects of Afghanistan. A veil of mystery surrounds political talk which is going on between Afghan and foreign political leaders. The political organism is being dismantled by several political parties which are operating under different names.

In addition, the balance of power may turn into a controversial issue. As elections approach, the political rivalry is strongly running amongst Afghan candidates who are necessarily linked with political parties. The elections will highlight the bitter fact that Afghan people vote more on ethnic grounds and links rather than by reasons of logic. Of course, a war-torn country that has experienced three decades of war, including a civil war, will not gain political maturity within a decade of experiencing so-called democracy. Moreover, within the last decade of presidential-style government, ethnic discrimination was easily tangible especially in official places and in the political fields. No doubt, it will take a long time to eliminate ethnic conflicts from the country. Moreover Afghan people are stuck in maze which is not an easy national path.

In the current hustle and bustle of presidential election, the attention and energy of the government authorities are diverted from official activities to electoral cases. It seems that the government officials are worried about the members of their parties and some are campaigning for them overtly or covertly, officially or non-officially. It is crystal clear that ethnic and factional tendencies overshadow any other interests and priorities across the country and this is a tragedy. In such a case, minority groups will always be the losers and will be treated with injustice. So, if the current trends go on in the country, peace and prosperity will remain a dream for ever.

Now, it is clear for people that the coalitions of political parties patched together in lofty buildings were just a flash in the pan. They were boasting about unity, social harmony and political achievements, however, very soon they divided into many groups due to political interests which led to public disappointment. It is beyond a shadow of doubt that actions speak louder than words, but unfortunately there is a complete disharmony between the actions and words of our political leaders. Moreover, they talk too much and practice too little. Hence, such attitudes have built a wall of mistrust between people and politicians. In other words, people have lost their desire to vote .There are two reasons behind. First, they believe that the election will be rigged as before and their ballots will not play any significant role. Second, they believe that whoever will be elected as president, will not practice what he preaches and their promises will turn out to be a bogus vote-gaining gimmick.

The current candidates who have come from different political parties have put people in a state of confusion. In other words, the political leaders of the same ethnic groups are not supporting the same candidates, they have also been divided into many groups and each of them support their own favorite candidates based on their personal interests. Of course, it seems that they are struggling for a lion’s share in their personal life and position rather than considering public interests. Therefore, the politicians are creating problems for the nation instead of solving them.

The issue of terrorism is another factor which affects the political structure of the country and has turned into a great cause for worry. People are highly susceptible to the acts of terror carried out by Taliban militants. These questions will arise in the minds of every Afghan citizen about what will be the strategies of the future president concerning the terrorist issue? Will Taliban militants be strengthened or weakened in the coming years? Who will be the winner in the coming years, terrorist or the new government? So, people crave peace and prosperity which are only possible if eradication of the Taliban-led insurgents is undertaken. Furthermore, if the strategy of the current government be continued regarding the terrorist case, the same fiasco will repeat itself.

The last issue that I am going to indicate is the withdrawal of foreign forces which plays a crucial role in the political dimensions of the country. There are likes and dislikes in this regard. Some of the people, including Mr. President, do not consider the presence of the foreign forces a necessity in the country. Even though, they do not claim independence, however, foreign forces follow their own political interests in Afghanistan rather than concentrating on security matters. In addition, they express their revulsion on the air strikes carried out by foreign forces which take lives of innocent Afghan civilians. On the other hand, there are people who deem the presence of the foreign troops in the country a dire need. Moreover, they are of the opinion that a war-torn country such as Afghanistan which is facing many challenges such as terrorist issues, economic strain, political stagnation, etc, needs the political support of foreign forces for a longer time.
