Cyber Armies, Economic War and Financial Market

Cyber Armies, Economic War and Financial Market

Recent cyber technology development and its direct links with economic War have brought about many changes to the financial market and economic security of the United Kingdom. In my previous articles on cyber terrorism, what I had predicted about the abrupt cyber attack on UK state institutions proved to be true. In my understanding, states like China, Russia, India, Iran and Pakistan have established well-trained cyber armies fighting a tenacious financial war against the US, UK and Europe. These technologically armed advanced armies have created a new class of threat which has been termed Economic War.

Financial market and national critical infrastructure in Britain may face an unwinnable war against these forces in near future because both Economic Warriors and hackers utilize an arsenal of techniques in order to target Britain's financial and military networks. They are skilled people, educated, trained, and intelligent and have know-how about the economic, military and financial market plans and strategies of the country.

They understand they are fighting for the best interests of their countries and struggling day and night to retrieve something valuable from European market and industry or gain control over their assets. As we have been experiencing their successful and consecutive cyber attack on UK's various institutions since 2007, these Economic Warriors of South, Southeast Asia, China, Iran, India and Russia now started migrating to Britain and Europe to further expedite their campaign of disruption and destruction.

Their main focus is to attack on control systems to disable or manipulate physical infrastructure and attack on computer networks to destroy important data of important institutions.Britain's Home Secretary recently warned that an attack on the country computer networks is a "new and growing danger".

The emergence of these technologically advanced cyber armies including those developing artificial intelligence technology are a constant threat to the country's security. The concept that London Olympic would be an attractive target of these well-trained armies who seek to damage critical infrastructure and disrupt the communication system is quite true.

In November 2011, Cyber Security Strategy was published which underlines the technicality of the threat faced by Britain's institutions from Economic Warriors and state sponsored cyber forces. These forces have already targeted the UK financial markets including Sony, Amazon, Citigroup, MasterCard, Military and Foreign Office computers.

In 2011, at the time of the announcement of Cyber Security Strategy, Cabinet Office Minister, Francis Maud said that the government is planning how to tackle the threat of Economic War and promote economic growth. The basic objectives of the UK Cyber Security Strategy are to introduce the traditions of partnership and transparency both across business and with international community in an effort to meet the growing cyber threat.

In its recent report (Tackling the Cyber Threat) RUSI has warned about the sensitivity of cyber threat but hoped that Britain expert organizations and institution have the ability to tackle the threat effectively: "UK Cyber Security is handled by a few dozen staff at the Office for Cyber Security in the Cabinet Office and by the Cyber Security Operation Centre (OSOC) at the GCHQ". No doubt, government institutions are dealing with the threat technically, but the threat goes wider and number of attacks of Economic Warriorss on government computers is increasing.

Experts are continued to see more sophisticated attacks, as well as low-tech traditional attacks, emanating from the headquarters of Economic Warrior groups. These groups want to target the UK's banking industry, military installations, power plants, air and land traffic communications networks and water pipes. Their basic aim is to retrieve data from various institutions and target electrical power grid and rail networks across the country.

Terrorist and extremist groups from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Turkey, Iran and cyber warriors of China and Russia, Hamas, Hezbollah, Taliban and al Qaeda have trained their members for future economic war. These groups can spread their messages through Internet and even can post graphic pictures on websites. These and other UK based groups can finance or hire hackers to attack via Internet. These groups may have acquired the skill to conduct passive forms of information warfare.

They are using Internet to conduct their terror attacks by employing email and file encryption. In Britain, dependence on computer has been major trend.Information warfare is now a worldwide issue that serves various financial and non-financial purposes.

Government officials are increasingly concerned about cyber attacks from individuals and groups, with malicious intent such as crime, terrorism, foreign intelligence gathering and acts of war. These attacks raise many serious questions for governments since these terror attacks cause mass destruction.

As the new phase of growth in Europe started and their economies are going to improve, Economic Warriors have turned their weapons towards their industry and financial market. They have deployed their electronic communication networks and information systems with the broader scope of a competitive knowledge based economy.

In these circumstances, neither the UK nor Europe's financial market is secure. Last year, in world summit for cyber security, experts and politician raised the question of future financial war. Director Computer Network in Pentagon headquarter, Harry Reduege warned about the coming financial war and said, "We have experienced a number of attacks against the financial sector, on the power grid and against our defense capabilities."

Economic Warriors and cyber terrorists' launch hundred of thousands attacks across the world every day and collect important military and financial data from various government and private institutions. E-Warriors use cyberspace to facilitate terror attacks, put websites to spread messages and recruit supporters around the world.

According to former Assistant Secretary for Homeland Defense Steven Bucci: "Cyber and economic means are edging toward the place where they truly are weapons of mass destruction."In summation, business industry and financial market in the United Kingdom must be worried enough to stay vigilant about their protection and security.
