JIP Recommends Qanooni for Vice Presidency

JIP Recommends Qanooni for Vice Presidency

KABUL - An official from the Jamiat-e-Islami Party (JIP), the Islamic Society Party, on Monday confirmed that Mohammad Younas Qanoni's name will be officially referred to the president within the next two days.

The Presidential Palace has yet to make a comment on the announcement, but there is a possibility that the president will soon refer Qanooni's name to the House of Representatives.

After several days of consultations and negotiations between various Mujahideen factions, Fahim's family and JIP decided that Qanooni becomes Fahim's heir.

"There are many candidates for the post of vice presidency, but majority inside Marshal Fahim's family supported Mr. Qanooni including the support of the president," JIP member Abdul Hafiz Manour said. "The person who wants to be Marshal Fahim's successor must show his competence to JIP and Mujahideen factions."

Beside his job as the vice president, Marshal Fahim also served as one of the commanders of Mujahideen factions and a prominent member of JIP. Even though Fahim's position will be filled in the Presidential Palace, his place will remain vacant outside the palace.

A source on condition of anonymity has confirmed that Qanooni's candidacy for this post was decided in a meeting in Fahim's house on Monday. It is likely that President Karzai will officially announce Qanooni as his first vice president tomorrow in presence of some high-ranking officials.

However, the Presidential Palace and the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs have not made yet commented in this regard. (Tolonews)
