Raheen Seeks Bamyan’s  Buddha’s Statues Rebuilding

BAMYAN CITY - Afghanistan Minister of Information and Culture, Dr. Sayed Makhdoom Raheen said Tuesday he hoped at least one of the two giant Buddha’s statues were rebuilt.

The minister expressed concern over the more possibly complete loss of the historical heritages in the ancient province, his office reported.

The Taliban hardliner had dynamited the two giant Buddha’s statues in central Bamyan province, March 11, 2001, [13 years ago].

Built in 554 and 570 both the 53 and 35 meters Buddha’s idols were respectively the world’s tallest effigies, with the  extremist Taliban destroying the cultural heritages amid worldwide opposition.

UNESCO had denounced the destruction and termed it as ‘vandalism and cultural terrorism’.

Meanwhile, Minister of Information and Culture Dr. Sayed Makhdoom Raheen had reportedly hoped to could help rebuild at least one of the two Buddha’s statues with the support of friendly countries.

According to the minister, assembling the still kept disintegrated pieces of the destroyed idols would help his ministry to step up towards rebuilding at least one of them. (WNA)
