PC Candidates Officially Start Canvassing Voters

KABUL - Provincial council (PC) candidates on Tuesday officially entered a month-long electioneering in the lead-up to the April elections.

The campaign will end 48 hours before the voting beings on April 5. More than 2,700 hopefuls, including 306 women, are in the run for provincial council seats.

On the campaign’s first day, hundreds of contenders started pasting their posters on walls and erecting billboards in Kabul to attract attention.

Earlier, the Independent Election Commission (IEC) had warned candidates of legal action if found violating the electoral law.

Candidates have expressed their inability to campaign in the face of growing insecurity, particularly in remote parts.

Though security departments have assured all possible measures to protect candidates during the electioneering, yet fears among candidates about the law and order situation remain high.

Four commissioners on the Electoral Complaints Commission (ECC) have refused to perform duty in insecure areas.  (Pajhwok)
