NATO Doubts Karzai will Sign BSA

KABUL - NATO Secretary General Andres Fog Rasmussen has spoken of the likelihood of the Afghan President Hamid Karzai referring the Bilateral Security Agreement (BSA) between Kabul-Washington to his successor, warning that the delay could have devastating consequences on Afghanistan's security.

"I am concerned because with no international presence after 2014, it will be difficult to generate financial support to sustain the Afghan Security Forces which means that the Afghan government would not be able to pay the salaries to soldiers and police. This would, of course, have devastating effects on Afghanistan's security," NATO Secretary General Rasmussen said.

The head of Parliamentary Commission for Internal Security has said that equipping Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) with necessary weaponries is extremely important and that the BSA signing should not be used against the Afghan forces.

"The size of the ANSF has reached the ideal level, but the quality has a long way to go," Chairman of Parliamentary Commission for Internal Security Mir Dad Khan Nejrabi said. "There is need for further training, equipments, financial and logistics support-including air support, armed vehicles, and heavy weaponries."

The stalemate on signing the BSA between Kabul and Washington has followed many concerns. In a recent development, NATO Secretary General Andres Fogh Rasmussen said that he doubts Karzai will sign the agreement before the elections. (Tolonews)
