WJ Reviews 2014 Budget

KABUL - Wolesi Jirga (WJ), Lower House of Parliament, on Saturday reviewed the draft budget for 2014. During their assessment, the issue of underused or misused government budgets came up and ultimately led to the MPs rejecting the draft.

According to audit reports this year, nearly half of all government offices failed to spend the majority of their allocated funds this year.

"Due to the lack of spending of development budgets by government intuitions, the draft budget was rejected," Lower House Budget Commission Chairman Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi said.

During the session, a number of MPs were highly critical of what appeared to be ineptness and malfeasance on the part of some ministers and office directors.

"Development budget expenditures are zero for some of the government institutions, and some of the institutions have acted against the budget manual as well," member of the Budget Commission Ameer Khan said.

"Those who have not spent their budgets accordingly, must be removed", MP form Balkh Ahmad Shah Ramazan said.

In the past, some of the ministers who failed to spend their budgets were summoned to the Lower House for rebuke. Last year, eleven ministers were summoned. (Tolo News)
