Grand Coalition Party to be announced By Saturday: Masoud

KABUL - Ahmad Zia Masoud, the leader of the National Front Party (NFP), said on Wednesday that a grand coalition for the 2014 Presidential election in April, consisting of political parties from across the country, would officially announce its formation by this coming Saturday, August 24.

Mr. Masoud told TOLOnews that several rounds of meetings between potential coalition member parties would go on and within the next four days a single coalition party under a new name would be formed.

"With the formation of this coalition party, a candidate for the upcoming Presidential election would be introduced," he said.

Mr. Masoud said that the Hezbe Jamiate Islami (Islamic Society Party), Hezbe Wahdat Mili (United Party), NFP and National Coalition Party (NCP) have already agreed to participate.

"With the formation of this coalition party, a candidate for the upcoming Presidential election would be introduced," added Mr. Masoud.

The comments from the NFP leader came after a new coalition party under the name of "Jabhi Etimad was reportedly formed in Kabul.

The Hezb-e-Wahdat Islami Party (Khalili faction) and Hezb-e-Islami Party (Abdul Hadi Arghandiwal faction) announced on Friday that they had agreed to jointly nominate a single candidate for President.

According to the Independent Election Commissions (IEC), the official window nominating Presidential and Provincial candidates begins on September 16 and ends on October 6, with the official list of candidates to be published on October 19.

The elections are scheduled to take place on April 5, 2014, but there are still many challenges facing the elections that need to be resolved. In addition to the security concerns, the absence of an efficient monitoring system for campaigns and a body that will regulate the expenditures incurred during the campaigning process are some of the issues that have been spotlighted.
