KABUL - President Hamid Karzai would visit Tehran on August 4 to attend Iranian President-elect Hassan Rohani’s inauguration, his office said on Thursday.

Foreign Minister Dr. Zalmai Rassoul would accompany Karzai, a statement from the Presidential Palace said, calling Iran a friendly country having cultural commonalities with Afghanistan.

Over the past decade, the neighbours have closely cooperated in different spheres, according to the statement that stressed greater Afghan-Iranian economic links.

With the notable exception of the US and Israel, Iran has invited world leaders to the inauguration. Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari has also accepted the invitation.

Lebanese President Michel Suleiman, Syrian Prime Minister Wael Nader al-Halqi and Russian President Vladimir Putin may also visit Tehran. (Pajhwok)
