MoI Assuages IEC’s Concerns about Security

KABUL - The Ministry of Interior (MoI) on Saturday said it was fully prepared to keep security for voter registration centers, a process beginning Sunday.

The Independent Election Commission (IEC) last week said it was concerned about security for voter registration centers, saying four million eligible people would be registered.

However, Interior Ministry spokesman Ghulam Siddiq Siddiqui said tight security measures were being put in place to make the process a success.

He said security measures for next year’s elections were discussed at a three-day seminar participated by interior ministry officials and provincial police chiefs.

He said security forces, especially police, were prepared and had been instructed to ensure strict security around registration centers.

“We see nothing to worry about regarding security for elections and registration centers and the IEC should also not worry about it,” he said.

The ministry official said other challenges concerning elections would be overcome in the lead up to the 2014 presidential and provincial vote.

He asked election officials not to be worried about security and should avoid sharing such concerns with the media because it could discourage people from participating in elections. (Pajhwok)
