Karzai Seeks to Curb CIA Operations in Afghanistan

KABUL - President Hamid Karzai is determined to curb American CIA operations in his country, his spokesman said.

The comments of spokesman Aimal Faizi came after the death of a U.S. agent and 10 Afghan children in a battle with insurgents in a remote corner of eastern Kunar province in early April, the British newspaper The Guardian reported Friday.

Karzai's campaign sets him up for another showdown with the U.S. government and will reopen questions about the CIA's secret operations in Afghanistan, the newspaper noted.

Faizi said the CIA has commando-like units under its control, some of whom operate under the direction of Afghanistan's Directorate of Security, known as the NDS.

"Some of them [the units] are said to be working with the NDS, but they are not armed by the NDS, not paid by the NDS, and are not sent to operations by the NDS. They are conducting operations without informing local authorities and when something goes wrong it is called a joint operation," Faizi said. (UPI)
