State Dept. Supports  Afghanistan’s Sovereignty

WASHINGTON - The United States, reiterating its support for Afghanistan’s sovereignty and efforts of all countries to help the country manage its security on its own.

“We have our own channels to all of those countries with regard to the importance of supporting Afghanistan’s sovereignty, its ability to manage its own future itself in security terms, in political terms, in economic terms,” the State Department spokesperson said.

Victoria Nuland renewed the Obama administration’s stance while addressing a news conference, at which she was answering a query regarding talks between China, Russia and Pakistan on the issue of Afghanistan.

Earlier in the day, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said though the US was emerging from a decade of war in Afghanistan, it continued to face threats from the Middle East and North African countries.

“The threat of violent extremism persists and continues to emanate from weak states and ungoverned spaces in the Middle East and North Africa,” Hagel said in his address to the National Defense University.

Later this month, the Senate Armed Services Committee has arranged a hearing on Afghanistan. Gen. Joseph Dunford, commander of US and NATO forces in Afghanistan, will testify before the Congressional Committee. (Pajhwok)
