US is Winning in Afghanistan: Dunford

US is Winning in Afghanistan: Dunford

KABUL - General Dunford said he is to meet with President Barack Obama soon to discuss the number of US forces staying in Afghanistan after the year 2014, of which the Marine General expressed optimism.

"I haven't yet provided my advice for the president on this...I have a feel for it, but not one I'm willing to discuss," the General said at his headquarters in Kabul "I would not tell you before President Obama."

Dunford also marked out that there will be a decision made on US mission in Afghanistan within the next few months.

"In these next couple of months, I expect those decisions to be made, and I think -- I believe we'll know by the summer, generally speaking, what the future is," he said.

"And the president of the United States and the president of Afghanistan are certainly committed to try to get this bilateral security agreement done by the May-June time frame."

Being optimist about a win to Afghanistan war, General Dunford – who has a little more than 600 days left to bring sufficient amount of confidence and stability to Afghanistan to turn self-sustaining – said "We came here because there was a threat of international terrorism from this region...and we haven't yet set the conditions where that won't occur again."

Dunford – who took over command of US and NATO forces two months ago – added that the US forces, in cooperation with other countries of the Coalition have given Afghanistan the opportunity to move forward.

The expected number of the forces General Dunford will need after 2014 is unofficially hinted by the US at around 9,000, the CBS said. (Tolo News)
