Election Fraud to Trigger Civil War: Sherzad

Election Fraud to Trigger Civil War: Sherzad

KABUL - Afghan Millat Party chairman Stana Gul Sherzad on Sunday warned the government and opposition that interference in the electoral process could spark a new round of civil war in the country.

At a press conference, he urged the people to take an active part in the next presidential and provincial council polls to do all they could to prevent fraud in the democratic exercise.

Foreign countries were trying to divide the Afghan people along ethnic and regional and linguistic lines, but the nation must stand united to thwart such conspiracies, Sherzad stressed.

He criticized the government for failing to devise a clear strategy for finding a political solution to the current problems of the country. “We are all for a political settlement, but dead-set against surrender to anyone.”

While calling for changes in the High Peace Council, the politician argued the panel for talks with the militants did not represent all tribes of the country. The body was only comprised of government representatives, he added.

The government should dissolve the current election commission and establish another one including representatives from all political parties and civil society organisations, he suggested.

For transparent elections, the authorities should issue new voting cards and computerized identity cards, the Millat Party leader concluded. (Pajhwok)
