US, Afghanistan Seeking Mutual Interests in Security Pact: Karzai

US, Afghanistan Seeking Mutual Interests in Security Pact: Karzai

KABUL - Afghanistan and the United States are both looking out their own interests in the security deal expected to be signed between the two next year, President Hamid Karzai said on Tuesday.

The US is pressuring Afghanistan to accept its interests while Afghanistan is pushing to ensure its own interests are met, Karzai said at the inaugural National Industries Conference in Kabul.

"The west seek their own interests in the security pact and we do ours. They are putting pressure on us through the media and their analysts, but we will not surrender and try hard to benefit from the deal," he said.

The Afghan-US security pact will focus on the presence and role of the US troops in Afghanistan after 2014.

"We will deal with the US and other western countries in a way to consider our mutual interests," he added.

Afghanistan still depends heavily on foreign aid and armies. With most foreign armies withdrawing from Afghanistan by the end of 2014, the security deal is important for the Afghan government as a means of ensuring some stability. (Tolo News)
