Abdullah Calls for Probe into Pul-I-Sukhta Clash

KABUL - Afghanistan National Coalition (ANC) head Dr. Abdullah Abdullah on Monday asked the government to launch a thoroughgoing investigation into Saturday's clash between residents and police in the Pul-i-Sokhta locality of Kabul.

President Hamid Karzai has already appointed a delegation to investigate the clash in the 6th police district. Two people were killed in the incident after a convoy of Ahmad Shah Massoud's supporters injured a resident.

Abdullah, addressing a gathering marking the martyrs' week and the 11th death anniversary of Ahmad Shah Massoud on the Kabul Medical University campus, put at six the number of people killed in the clash. Several others were injured, he said.

He said the martyrs' week was aimed at paying tribute to the people who laid down their lives for defense of the country and that residents should not have been bothered.

"If the late Ahmad Shah Massoud and high peace council chairman Prof. Burhanuddin Rabbani were alive and have heard about the death of six people on martyrs day, what would have been their reaction?'' the former foreign minister asked.

Abdullah said some sentimental youth were involved in the Pul-i-Sokhta clash and the young blood might have been provoked by elements wanted to promote their own agenda.

He said such incidents put negative impact on the national unity, asking the government to take practical steps to ensure the incident was impartially probed and the real culprits brought to justice.

Abdullah also paid homage to Massoud and Rabbani and other slain jihadi figures, saying their sacrifices would not go in waste.

Ahmad Jan Massoud, the son of Ahmad Shah Masood, was also present on the occasion. (Pajhwok)
