Situation in Afghanistan Discussed in Astana

ASTANA - The situation in Afghanistan was discussed during the meeting between Kazakh Foreign Minister Yerzhan Kazykhanov and senior Director for Russian and Eurasian Affairs of the National Security Council of the United States Alice Wells, Kazakh Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday.

"Opening the meeting, Kazykhanov expressed condolences on the recent tragic events in the U.S. city of Aurora, Colorado. During the meeting they discussed issues of regional and global security, including issues of stability in Afghanistan, further enhancing of bilateral trade and economic cooperation," the statement said.

The press release says that the sides reviewed the implementation of agreements reached at the meeting of the Presidents Nursultan Nazarbayev and U.S. President Barack Obama, held on the sidelines of the summit on nuclear security in Seoul.

Kazykhanov said "further strengthening of the strategic partnership between Kazakhstan and the United States will contribute to regional stability and international security."
Referring to the Afghan problem, Kazykhanov informed about the contribution of Kazakhstan to the economic reconstruction of Afghanistan, aimed at the construction of social facilities and training of Afghan students in Kazakhstan. (Agencies)
