Lawmakers Support Karzai’s Anti-Graft Stance

KABUL - A parliamentary group on Tuesday voiced support for President Hamid Karzai's stance to stem corruption plaguing the country.
The head of Etimad group of Wolesi Jirga, Mohammad Noor Akbari, told a press conference they supported Karzai's comments against graft, as people would lose confidence on the government if it failed to stop corruption.

Anti-graft campaign should be at national level, starting from high-ranking government officials, and corrupt people, regardless of their status, should be punished, he added.
The group in its memorandum said corruption had become a system and corrupt people are high-ranking officials and politicians.

They urged the judicial departments to investigate corruption cases, including the Kabul Bank scandal, corruption in granting major contracts to foreigners and misuse of positions.
In a recent special address in parliament, Karzai acknowledged his government had done deals in the past due to political interests but ruled out such concessions in the future. (Pajhwok)
