Afghanistan Down in Failed States Index Ranks

Afghanistan Down in Failed States Index Ranks

KABUL - Afghanistan has moved down the ranks in the Failed States Index, indicating a slender gain for the conflict-battered country, a Washington DC-based organization said on Tuesday.
In the eighth edition of its annual index, the non-profit Fund for Peace said that as the United States sought a sustainable exit strategy, Afghanistan had edged down to the 7th position from 6th in 2011.

Another war-hit country, Iraq had also been able to slightly improve its position, but African countries continued to do a terrible job, the research body said.

Highlighting global political, economic and social pressures experienced by states, the FSI ranks Somalia as number one for the fifth consecutive year -- thanks to widespread lawlessness, terrorism, insurgency and pirate attacks. It is followed by Chad and Sudan.

Contrarily, Finland remained in the best position, with its Scandinavian neighbors Sweden and Denmark grabbing the best three rankings because of strong social and economic indicators, paired with excellent provision of public services and respect for human rights.

Kyrgyzstan was described as the most improved nation, rebounding from a marked fall the previous year that was triggered by the 2010 revolution that inspired significant political reforms and stable transition of power. (Pajhwok)
