Parliamentary Body to Prepare Policy on Graft

KABUL - Wolesi Jirga has formed a 10-member committee to prepare a comprehensive policy on good governance and corruption to be presented to a high-level meeting of representatives from the judiciary, executive and legislature.
Lower house members say President Hamid Karzai has convened the joint meeting for June 21. MP Sher Wali Wardak said Karzai had asked Speaker Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi to send all MPs to the meeting.

The parliament last week rose for a summer recess, but the house could be called into session in an extraordinary situation through a special order from the president.

Wardak said Karzai had called for a "fruitful discussion" on good governance and corruption. However, he did not think the objective of the meeting was to discuss good governance and corruption. Karzai wanted to inform participants about his recent achievements, he believed.

A meeting, chaired by Speaker Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi, discussed on Sunday preparations for the joint sitting. Wardak, who attended the meeting, said they had decided to form a 10-member body to float recommendations and prepare a policy in this regard.

Mohammad Nawab Mangal, a lawmaker from southeastern Paktia province, said recommendations floated by lawmakers and demands from common people would be incorporated in the proposed policy.
A government official, meanwhile, told Pajhwok Afghan News that Karzai was expected to discuss bringing forward the timetable for the next presidential election.

But Mangal rejected the suggestion, saying that the timetable could be changed only when amendments were made to the constitution.

"As far as my information is concerned, Karzai aims to show the world ahead of the Tokyo Conference that Afghans are united against endemic corruption," he remarked.

Wolesi Jirga Deputy Secretary Azizullah Al-Fiti acknowledged receiving a letter from the Presidential Place, asking all lawmakers to attend the meeting. (Pajhwok)
