6mln Afghan Children Facing Major Threats

KABUL - Around 6 million Afghan kids are currently facing poverty and other serious threats in the country, a spokesman for the Afghan Ministry of Work and Social Affairs, Ali Iftikhari said.

On children's international day, Afghanistan was declared the worst country for kids as there are 6 million poor kids including street children in the country mostly without shelter and threatened by family violence.

The ministry has taken measures to provide work opportunities for the poor families in order to avoid kids to work in the streets under hot sunshine and in cold winters.

"The situation of children in the country is not satisfactory, currently there are 6 million vulnerable kids in the country, we have sheltered and covered two million up to now. Most of these kids are without any shelter due to family violence," Mr Eftekhari said.

"Some others are related to poor families, we are trying to provide employment opportunities for these families to prevent kids from working in the streets," he added.

Meanwhile, human rights organizations have criticized the government for not doing enough to help vulnerable kids and prevent them from being used as child laborers. (Tolo News)
