No Special Electoral Tribunal for Upcoming Polls: FEFA

KABUL - There should be no special electoral tribunal for the upcoming Afghan elections and none of the election committee commissioners should be prosecuted, Free and Fair Election Foundation of Afghanistan (FEFA) said Thursday.
Reviewing the authorities and organizational structure of the Afghanistan's Independent Election Commission, FEFA's Chief Executive Officer, Jandad Spinghar said members of the election commission should be protected against any kind of prosecution or they will quit their impartiality.

"Members of the election commissions should be protected against any prosecution, their decisions must be respected, no special tribunal should be formed in this regard, and none of them should be prosecuted," Mr Spinghar said.

"Otherwise, they may feel threatened and quit their impartiality," he added.

Meanwhile, Afghan Members of Parliament believe that electoral commissioners should be elected by and independent committee, as the current commission has been appointed by Afghan President Hamid Karzai for a period of three years.

"The commissioners should be elected transparently in order to avoid concentration of power to one person," Badakhashn MP, Fauzia Kofi said.
Some other MPs believe that Afghan parliament should approve the election commissioners in order to avoid outside intervention.

"It's our job to give vote of confidence to the commissioners, to avoid intervention of outsiders and stop racism, Herat MP Qazi Nazir Ahmad said."

This comes as some Afghan political figures say that if the government allocates a budget for the Election commissioners, it will increase the level of its intervention in the commissions' affairs.

There are also politicians who believe that the electoral law should be approved by the parliament by the end of this year as there is little time left for the next presidential election which is expected to be held in 2014. (Tolo News)
