Karzai Names 2 for Top Judicial Slots

KABUL - President Hamid Karzai on Monday nominated two members of the Supreme Court's High Council for a vote of confidence from the lower house of parliament, an official said.

Former minister of justice, Mohammad Sarwar Danish, and Supreme Court's judicial officer Abdul Malik Kamavi have been named for the slots, Wolesi Jirga Secretary Abdul Sattar Khawasi told Pajhwok Afghan News.

Currently lawmakers were vetting the nominees’ documents, the secretary said, adding it was unclear when they would appear before the assembly for a vote of confidence.

Three members of the Supreme Court council completed their terms a year ago, with the Wolesi Jirga repeatedly asking the president to introduce his picks for the judicial positions.

Under the relevant law, of the nine top court members, three are appointed for a four years period, three for seven years and as many for 10 years. (Pajhwok)
