Afghan Electoral Law Needs Amendments: FEFA

Afghan Electoral Law Needs Amendments: FEFA

KABUL - Afghanistan will face fresh challenges if its electoral law is not revised and reviewed by the Afghan parliament, the chief of Free and Fair Election Foundation for Afghanistan (FEFA) Jandad Spinghar said Tuesday.
Spinghar said at a press conference in Kabul that the Afghan electoral law is very basic and that major amendments are needed to clarify the impartiality of the Election Commission Members, their area of authorization, and professionalism.
He emphasized that the law should be reviewed and approved by Afghan parliament.

"The law which is made by the Election Commission is primary draft. From the outset, its impartiality, its areas of authorization and the professionalism of its members should be guaranteed," Spinghar said.

A spokesman for the Afghan Independent Election Commission, Noor Mohammad Noor, said that a draft of the suggested amendments to the election law has been finalized and will be sent to the Parliament for approval.
"Previous experiences showed that some amendments were needed in the electoral law. It will be sent to the Parliament for approval after the necessary amendments are made," Noor said.

Meanwhile, the head of Afghanistan's media watchdog welcomed FEFA's suggestions and said the role of the media will be vital in removing the election challenges.

"FEFA had some specific suggestions such as public awareness, community involvement programs, and some other necessary reforms," Nai's Media Watch head Sediqullah Tawhidi commented.
"These suggestions should be seriously taken into consideration," he said. (Tolo News)
