Qatar Supports Inclusive Afghan Peace Talks

KABUL - Foreign Minister Dr. Zalmai Rasoul has held formal talks with his Qatari counterpart on the opening of Taliban'sliaison office in Doha.
Rassoul and Dr. Khalid Bin Mohamed Al Attiyah also conferred on the opening a Qatari embassy in Kabul and agreed on more consultations on the Afghan-led peace effort.

At a joint news conference after Tuesday's meeting, Attiyah said he would visit Kabul soon to sign a final agreement on cooperation between the two friendly countries.
The state-run Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported the host minister indicated that representatives of the Afghan government, Taliban and other parties would be invited to the negotiations.

Attiyah was quoted as saying: "Successful negotiations should not be restricted to certain groups. For the talks to succeed, all parties should be invited so that the idea remains vivid and a solution satisfying all parties is achieved.

"Yes, we will talk to all parties," reiterated the minister, who hoped the creation of Taliban's bureau would spur the dialogue and help reach a solution that was acceptable to all parties.

Rasoul said he had conveyed greetings from President Hamid Karzai to Emir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al Thani. His fruitful meeting with the emir covered issues of mutual concern, including regional stability, he added.

Rassoul thanked Qatar for participation in the Afghan peace process, led by the Afghan government and owned by the people. The reconciliation effort would be discussed in future meetings, he explained.

Afghans must be leading the peace drive, the visiting minister stressed, saying thet their American friends were aware of the fact that an Afghan-led process had better prospects of success.

Asked when the Taliban office would be opened, Rassoul replied that the inauguration had been agreed upon, but details would be discussed later. (Pajhwok)
