Govt Reverses Decision,  Appoints New Governor for Faryab

KABUL - Following a storm of protests by residents, the government has reversed its decision and appointed a new acting governor for northern Faryab province.
Several days ago, President Ashraf Ghani appointed Mohammad Dawood Laghmani as new governor for Faryab in line with a proposal from the Independent Directorate of Local Governance (IDLG).
But the decision drew strong opposition Faryab residents and supporters of Junbish-i-Milli party. Angry protestors closed the gate to the governor’s house.
Subsequently, the government introduced Laghmani at an Afghan National Army (ANA) base in the province.
In the wake of big demonstrations, the government reversed its decision and appointed a new acting governor for the province.
In a statement, IDLG said Abdul Qayyum Rashikh, former deputy governor, had been named as new acting governor for the province.
The decision was made following a request from Faryab residents and in order to resolve the issue, the statement added. (Pajhwok)
