UAE, Britain Sign Agreement to Build Afghan Highway

ABU DHABI - The United Arab Emirates and Britain signed an agreement on Tuesday to build an important highway in Afghanistan, the official WAM news agency reported.
It was signed by the UAE foreign minister, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahayan and his British counterpart William Hague, who is on a one-day visit to the Gulf federation.

The project is "a demonstration of the UAE and the UK's commitment to peace and stability in Afghanistan," the agency quoted Sheikh Abdullah as saying.

No further details were immediately available on the new highway's route, cost or timetable.

During his visit, Hague was also expected to discuss with UAE officials the situation in Syria and Yemen, the Middle East peace process and global warming, the British embassy in Dubai said in a statement.
It said Hague would also visit Abu Dhabi's Al-Dhafra air base, the largest in the UAE's seven emirates. (Agencies)
