Kabul Hosts Maiden  Intelligence Heads Meeting

KABUL - Kabul on Thursday hosted the first regional conference of intelligence and security officials from eight countries on cooperation in fighting terrorism.
A statement from the National Directorate of Security (NDS) said the two-day conference ‘Regional conference on fighting terrorism’ was attended by spymasters the US, Pakistan, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan..
The conference was part of the Afghan government’s efforts for attracting the support of regional countries and the world for Afghan forces against terrorism as well as support for the peace process led by Afghans.
Intelligence services’ heads of the regional countries thanked NDS for the initiative of organizing the conference, the statement added.
Participants of the meeting focused most on common threats of terrorism on the national, regional and cross-regional levels and developed a joint roadmap for getting rid of these threats, the source said.
NDS representatives in this meeting shed a light on available information and clues about extensive presence of terrorist groups in Afghanistan and said that Afghan government’s anti-terrorism activities were a step toward peace and stability in the region, the statement said.
The source said Afghan security and defense forces had played an active role in fighting terrorism in the region and they fought not only for the defense of Afghanistan but for eliminating common threats for the region.
The intelligence agency said that representatives of the regional countries in the meeting acknowledged Afghanistan’s active role in fighting against terrorism on the regional level and praised Afghan forces and voiced support for the current government system as well as peace negotiations led by the Afghan government.
All the participants of the meeting praised the role of Afghanistan in areas of regional consensus, definition of terrorism, common threats and eliminating them and acceleration of information exchange between intelligence services, the source said.
The NDS said it planned to host regional security conferences to develop consensus against terrorism in the near future.
