US Military Wants Troops in Afghanistan After 2014

KABUL - US military and diplomatic officials are putting together a new strategy that will commit American troops and money to Afghanistan after 2014, the National Journal reported.
The strategic review is being prepared in advance of a NATO summit in Chicago next May, a key gathering for securing financial and political resources for Afghanistan's future.

"There will be a US military presence [after 2014]," ISAF Commander General John Allen said on Saturday in Kabul, the National Journal reported. "This is a work in progress. We're not going to be done at the end of '14."

Momentum is building for a long-term presence, according to the National Journal. At a Traditional Loya Jirga held in November, elders endorsed the plan of Afghan leaders for a long-term relationship with the West after 2014. At the Bonn conference earlier this month, western countries and organizations pledged a lasting commitment to Afghanistan.
