Atmar, Lyons Discuss  Prisoner Swap, Truce

KABUL - Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs Hanif Atmar and the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan have discussed the prisoner swap and start of intra-Afghan talks.
In a statement, MoFA said Atmar and Deborah Lyons conferred on latest developments. They urged the Taliban to facilitate the urgent start of talks with the government and other Afghan factions.
The importance of strengthening regional and international consensus on the peace process and establishment of a humanitarian ceasefire were also deliberated on.
Both sides exchanged views on preparations for the Senior Officials Meeting (SOM), which is scheduled to be held on Tuesday, July 28.
The UN diplomat highlighted the outcomes from the recent international and regional consultations on strengthening the consensus for peace, the statement added.
Lyons emphasised the importance of continuing such initiatives in future and also reiterated UN’s continued support for a peaceful and prosperous Afghanistan.
Atmar thanked the UN SRSG for the world body’s positive role and continued commitment to the war-torn country. (Pajhwok)
