US troop drawdown ahead of schedule: CNN

The Trump administration is ahead of troop pullout from Afghanistan in line with the US-Taliban peace pact, CNN reports.
In two months after the signing of the agreement, the US has currently less than 10,000 military personnel in Afghanistan down from more than 13,000.
US troop levels have to be further slashed to 8,600 until mid-July in accordance with the treaty. But that goal could now be attained months before the deadline.
An unnamed defence official told the network that the Covid-19 pandemic had sped up the troop withdrawal process.
In view of operational security concerns associated with the drawdown, the report said, the Pentagon refused to give updates on the current troop levels.
The Department of Defense said: "US Forces-Afghanistan continues to reduce force levels and expects to be at 8,600 US troops within 135 days (mid-July) …"  (Pajhwok)
