Japan Pledges $17m to Improve Food Safety

KABUL - Japan has promised $17 million to improve food safety in Kabul and Bamyan provinces. The money will be channeled through the United Nation's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to improve irrigation in the two provinces, the Afghan Ministry of Energy and Water said.

With better irrigation, farmers will be able to produce higher yields, the ministry added.

The project is expected to improve yields on 18,000 acres of land. The funds will also be used to improve the skills of the energy and water ministry's personnel.

"$10m will be spent on the irrigation system of Shakardara district of Kabul province [using water from the] Shahe Aros Water plant and $7m will be used to improve water irrigation systems in Bamyan and Kabul provinces," Mohammad Ismail Khan, the acting Minister of Power and Water, said.

Japan's ambassador to Afghanistan said that the development of the country's agriculture industry is a priority for Japanese financial aid, and his country is looking forward to a lasting relationship with Afghanistan.
