Nangarhar: Circulation of Small Notes Gets Under Way

JALALABAD - The circulation of process 200million small banknotes has begun in eastern Nangarhar province, following public complaints regarding their shortage and a campaign to discourage the use of the Pakistani currency.
The distribution of small banknotes kicked off at the governor’s house in Jalalabad. Governor Shah Mahmood Miakhel called the shortage of small bills and high rates the main challenges in promoting the afghani.
But the central bank provided the required bills, whose distribution began today, the governor announced while addressing a news conference at his office.
Price lists, drawn up by the municipality and transport department, are being enforced by a commission comprised of local officials and representatives of the people and private sector, Miakhel told journalists.
The governor warned the individuals using these notes for profit of punitive action under the law of the land.
Tawhid Yar Ahmadzai, Da Afghanistan Bank director, said the central office had sent Nangarhar notes worth 500,000 million afghanis, including 200 million small bills, to the province.
The small banknotes -- in denominations of 2, 5. 10, 20, 50 and 100 afghanis -- would be provided to moneychangers, government departments, district chiefs and others to address the issue of their shortage in the province.
Mayor Al-Ameen Hussain said they had prepared new price lists, as the previous ones had problems. Nobody would be allowed to violate the fresh lists.
Haji Mustafa, head of moneychangers’ association, promised keeping an eye the brokers to ensure the small bills were not hoarded. (Pajhwok)
