KABUL - Iran and India have agreed on stepping up implementation of the Chabahar port project, officials from both countries say.
“A pleasure to co-chair 19th Joint Commission Meeting with India’s External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar in Tehran,” Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif tweeted.
His Indian counterpart Subrahmanyam Jaishankar also hailed as productive the India-Iran Joint Commission meeting.
“Reviewed the entire gamut of our cooperation. Agreed on accelerating our Chabahar project,” wrote Jaishankar on his Twitter account.
Being jointly developed by India, Iran and Afghanistan, the port is located on the Indian Ocean.
Speaking at a joint news conference with Jaishankar, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani hoped the project would boost trade in the region.
“Completing the Chabahar-Zahedan railway and connecting it to Iran’s national railway can elevate the position of Chabahar port,” he believed. (Pajhwok)
