KABUL - The Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Sunday said presidential candidates who collected less than 100,000 votes in the election would not be given their money deposits back.
The presidential election was held on September 28 and its preliminary results were announced today, Sunday.
Based on the results, President Ashraf Ghani has won the September 28 ballot by bagging 50.64 per cent of the votes while Chief Executive Officer Dr. Abdullah Abdullah stood second with 39.52 per cent of the votes.
Gulbuddin Hekmatyar secured 70,242 votes, Rahmatullah Nabil 33921 votes, Faramarz Tamanna 18,066 votes, Sayed Noorullah Jalili 15,526 votes, Abdul Latif Pedram 12,608 votes, Enayatullah Hafiz 11,374 votes, Mohammad Hakim Torsan 6,504 votes, Ahmad Wali Massoud 3,942 votes, Mohammad Shahab Hakimi 3,324 votes, Ghulam Faroq Najrabi 1,606 votes, Mohammad Hanif Atmar 1,565 votes and Noor Rahman Liwal 865 votes.
These 12 candidates securing less than 100,000 votes each had paid the Independent Election Commission (IEC) one million afghanis in election deposit.
Based on the electoral procedure, a person can run for president who complies with the article 38 of the Electoral Law, have the support of 100,000 people in 20 provinces of the country and provides one million afghanis in election deposit to IEC.
IEC acting spokesman Zabihullah Sadat told Pajhwok Afghan News that candidates who secured less than 100,000 votes will not be refunded the election deposit.
According to the IEC, 1,824,401 people had participated in the presidential election.
Wolesi Jirga candidates also paid 30,000 afghanis in election deposit to the IEC and if a candidate secures less than 1,000 votes the money would not be refunded based on the commission’s policy.
The Wolesi Jirga elections were contested by 2,676 candidates on October 20, 21 in 32 provinces of the country. (Pajhwok)
