IEC Optimistic Its Provincial Offices to Reopen Soon

KABUL - The Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Wednesday said some of its provincial offices would be reopened within next two days.
Mirza Mohammad Haqparast, IEC deputy spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News that talks had been held with protestors and the IEC was optimistic about the reppening of the closed IEC offices within next two days.
He said after reopening of the closed offices, the vote recount and audit process would be conducted in such provinces based on the law.
The vote audit and recount process has been completed in 27 provinces and outcome of the talks with the protestors had reached the IEC secretary and submitted to the IEC leadership.
He did not provide further details, but said the IEC will make decision about the audit in the 27 provinces and will share results with people at the end of today or tomorrow.
The Transparent Election Foundation of Afghanistan (TEFA) told a press conference that its findings showed that the IEC had no creditable vote audit mechanism during the last two months, triggering opposition from some electoral teams.
the electoral watchdog said and the election commission had failed to satisfy the electoral tickets within the framework of electoral law.
TEFA urged all parties involved in the election process to pave the ground for resumption of the vote recount and audit process in the seven provinces under the framework of law and remove hurdles in IEC affairs.
The presidential election was held on September 28. The preliminary result had been previously expected on October 19 and the final outcome on October 7.
But the results were postponed due to slow data entry and technical problems in the commission’s main server.
The IEC had earlier promised unveiling the preliminary results from the election on November 14 and the final results on December 6. (Pajhwok)
