Over 10m Afghans Face Severe Food Insecurity: UN

KABUL - Around one-third of the Afghan population needed urgent humanitarian action over the last three months, a coalition of UN agencies and partners said on Monday.
The latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) Alert said some 10.23 million people were living in a state of severe food insecurity.
The IPC, which classifies food insecurity in five distinct phases, said about 2.44 million Afghan were believed to be in an emergency situation and 7.79 million in a crisis situation.
It estimates the situation could worsen heading into next year, with the numbers of those experiencing severe acute food insecurity set to rise to 11.29 million.
Some 2.7 million people could find themselves in an emergency situation and 8.6 million in a crisis situation) between November 2019 and March 2020.
The IPC offered recommendations to alleviate the food insecurity problems. Providing humanitarian food assistance, in cash or kind, is one proposal.
The IPC urged partners to bear in mind the complex context of Afghanistan’s ethnic make-up, rugged terrain and unrelenting civil unrest when developing strategies for improving food security and livelihoods.
The report called for addressing the impact of the changing climate, with focus on programmes that built resilience to disasters and the reduction of disaster risks.
It suggested water irrigation systems should, in addition, be improved and strengthened. (Pajhwok)
