SAR-I-PUL CITY - Northern Sar-i-Pul province has produced 59,500 tonnes of onion in 2019, showing a 20 percent increase over last year, farmers and officials said on Monday.
Farmers told Pajhwok Afghan News the crop had been cultivated on thousands of acres of land last year but it was not exported.
As a result, per seven kilograms of onion accounted for seven to 15 afghanis last year, when growers complained of low prices.
But this year, they voiced pleasure over the yield and piece of onion. They said per seven kilograms of the vegetable sold for 85 to 100 afghanis in Sar-i-Pul.
Abdul Hai, a farmer, told Pajhwok he had cultivated two acres of land with onion and collected a yield of 12,000 kilograms.
He said had earned one million afghanis from his onion crop this year.
Abdul Hamid, another grower, had cultivated six acres of land with onion and collected a harvest of 30,000 kilograms.
He also expressed happiness over the increase in the onion yield, saying he had an income of 2.5 million afghanis.
Agriculture Director Mohammad Salim Ranjir said the province produced 59,500 tonnes of onion this year, indicating a 20 percent hike over last year.
He added the crop had been cultivated on more than 1,000 hectares of land this year. (Pajhwok)
