Amid Challenges, Ghor Female Reporters Paid Meagerly

FIROZKOH - The number of female journalists in western Ghor province has increased from four to six but they are paid meager wages.
According to Ghor’s Information and Culture department, the six female journalists have been working at local media outlets and receive less than 5,000 afghanis per month each.
The six females, who work as reporters with their 18 men counterparts, told Pajhwok Afghan News that they were paid insufficient salaries despite challenges like insecurity and cultural restrictions.
They companied about discriminatory treatment of government officials and media outlets’ directors with them and called these as their major challenges.
Malaika Amiri, a reporter with Sada-i-Ghor radio, said: “It was my wish to become a journalist and I know ours is a traditional society, but I accepted all threats and am still interested to work in my field.”
She told Pajhwok her interest was to highlight women’s rights through her work.
However, she expressed concern over receiving a small salary compared to male reporters, saying her salary could not meet her family needs. She urged civil society societies advocating reporters’ rights to play their role in this regard
Jamila Karimi, another female journalist, said: “Since childhood, I wanted to become a reporter and I was confident my dream would come true one day and I am currently working as a reporter at one of Ghor media organizations.”
Besides working at the female reporters’ center, Karimi also works at private Sarhad radio. She urged relevant government organs to provide them some training programs for building their capacity.
Two others female journalists, who wished to go unnamed, complained about their directors’ discriminatory behavior but did not share details in this regard.
A number of other female journalists held similar views and urged journalists’ rights institutions to address their concerns as soon as possible.
Maroof Sayeedi, Afghanistan Journalists Center regional director in Ghor, confirmed the issues to Pajhwok and promised to resolve them in cooperation with the Information and Culture Department officials.
Fakhruddin Aryapour, Information and Culture director, also acknowleged problems female journalists faced in Ghor.
He said eight years back 12 female journalists worked in the province but last year their strength decreased two and now had jumped to six again. (Pajhwok)
