KABUL - President Hamid Karzai said on Saturday the upcoming Loya Jirga should be held as scheduled, his office said. In a meeting with political figures and high ranking government officials at the Presidential Palace, the President discussed in detail preparations for the November 16 grand assembly, which has been called into session to discuss the proposed strategic cooperation agreement with the US.
Participants of the meeting expressed their views regarding all issues, including the strategic cooperation pact, peace talks with the rebels, and possible ways to resolve the issues, a statement issued from the Presidential Palace said.
Although talks between the Afghan government and the US on the agreement are still in place, the traditional Jirga is convened to give suggestions in this regard. Therefore, Karzai insisted the Jirga should be held on time, the statement said.
