Bamyan Inmates Complain About Overcrowding

BAMYAN CITY- Prisoners at an overcrowded jail in central Bamyan province complain they are unable to sleep well at night due to a lack of space. Nearly 200 men are held at the facility housed in a rented building in the Sar-Asiab area of Bamyan city. Hailing from Bamyan, Daikundi and Maidan Wardak provinces, the inmates are serving their jail terms for committing crimes such as murder, robbery and drug trafficking.

One of the prisoners, Abdul Rahim, 28, said 39 people were held at their cell which has the capacity for 20 persons. He had been sentenced to 12 years in jail on charge of human trafficking.

The number of prisoners held at the jail was 105 last year, but it increased to almost double this year, he said. However, he said they were happy with the behavior of jail authorities.

Jail superintendent, Col. Ghullam Ali Bator, said some new tents were being erected in the jail to resolve the accommodation problem. The prisoners also preferred tents rather than the dark cells, he said.

Family members of some of the prisoners said the inmates would not be able to live in tents during cold weather.

Eight women and a child are also being held at a separate building inside the jail.

Bator said all the prisoners would be transferred to a new building in Dasht-i-Eisakhan area of Bamyan city.
