JALALABAD - Princesses Soraya Malik, granddaughter of King Amanullah Khan, has urged Afghans to support the government’s quest for peace and stability in the country.
During a visit to eastern Nangarhar province on the 100th Independence Day of Afghanistan, Soraya Malik laid a floral wreath on King Amanullah Khan’s grave.
She told Pajhwok Afghan News she had traveled to Nangarhar to join the celebration of the 100th Independence Day of the country. Soraya, daughter of Princesses Hindia, said she had long wished to visit the province.
“My grandmother, (Queen Soraya) gave me her own name because she loved me so much,” the visiting princesses recalled.
Ms Malik wept while praying for Queen Soraya at her grave and said she had spent a large part of her life with the queen.
She added Independence Day was was joyously marked in the lifetime of King Amanullah Khan, but conflict over the past few decades in the country had dampened the occasion.
King Amanullah Khan’s granddaughter hoped for lasting peace and stability in Afghanistan, asking the people to support the government’s efforts.
Amanullah Khan’s tomb, built decades ago, has been repaired several times. The mausoleum is currently being rehabilitated.
The renovation of the mausoleum was supposed to be completed before Afghanistan’s 100th Independence Day, but officials say it was delayed by technical issues. (Pajhwok)
