KABUL - US Special Representative for Afghanistan Peace Zalmay Khalilzad has meet Indian External Affairs Minister Jaishankar in New Delhi, the Indian media reported on Wednesday.
Ambassador Khalilzad ’s visit to India comes amid expectations of a deal between the US and Taliban on ending almost two decades of war in Afghanistan.
Jishanker tweeted: “Useful discussions with Khalilzad provided a comprehensive update on the situation in Afghanistan. Shared views on how we could work together effectively. ”
On Monday, Khalilzad said "excellent progress" had been made in the peace talks and a potential deal with the Taliban would allow for conditions-based withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan.
India has been a key stakeholder in the peace and reconciliation process in Afghanistan.
In a significant move, India had sent two former diplomats in "non-official" capacity to a conference on the Afghan peace process in Moscow in November last year. The event had also been attended by a Taliban delegation.
The conference organised by Russia was attended by representatives from Afghanistan as well as several other countries, including the US, Pakistan and China. (Pajhwok)
