US Envoy Chides Afghan MPs Over Speaker Row

KABUL - US Ambassador to Afghanistan John Bass said Washington was disappointed and concerned about the new Afghan Parliament failure to fulfill its responsibilities towards the people.
Talking to journalists at the US Embassy here, he said the failure to resolve the ongoing dispute over the election of speaker indicated that some lawmakers were putting narrow interests or in some cases self-interest ahead of national interest.
He said the parliament ruckus continued at a time when Afghan security forces bravely defended the Afghan people and families of those security forces dealt with the trauma of loss and the fear that comes with having members of their families in harms.
The US envoy questioned what message did it send to all of them about the sacrifices they had been making  for this country with they see the elected members of parliament fighting among themselves instead of unifying to mobilize additional support for Afghan security forces in fighting for the people of this country
Bass called on the members of the elected parliament to fulfill the responsibilities of office for which in they there were elected.
“The Afghan people very much want to see engaged in doing the business of people of the country and the business of government. “ (Pajhwok)
