KABUL - In the 239-member Wolesi Jirga, 54 percent of women and 26 percent men have been re-elected, Pajhwok Afghan News has learnt.
Wolesi Jirga elections were held on October 20 and 21 across the country barring Ghazni and Kandahar provinces. The elections in Kandahar were held a week later.
Elections on 11 seats in Ghazni will be conducted on September 28. Final results of polls from other provinces were announced earlier. The Kabul results were unveiled late on Tuesday.
According to the list of successful candidates, 80 representatives --- 35 women and the rest men --- have been members of the Wolesi Jirga in the past as well.
Women account for 65 seats in the Wolesi Jirga. Of the total 65 successful embers, 54 percent have been lawmakers in the past as well.
Similarly, according to the results, 26 percent of the 174 members have remained members of the lower house in the past.
The Wolesi Jirga Secretariat says elections for of the lower house speaker would be held next week. At least 10 people are n the race for the slot. (Pajhwok)
