AIBAK - At least seven miners have been killed in a methane explosion at a coalmine in remote Dara-i-Suf Bala district of northern Samangan province, an official said on Monday.
Ahmad Ali Hussaini, the district administrative chief, told Pajhwok Afghan News the explosion happened in Dahan-i-Tor coalmine belonging to Mohammad Din on Sunday afternoon.
He said two of the dead miners were residents of neighboring Dara-i-Suf Payan district, two of Dara-i-Suf Bala, two of Sar-i-Pul province and one was resident of Balkh province.
Around 30 miners were working inside the mine pit when the explosion occurred, but the rest were rescued, Hussaini said. Most of coal mines in the area were being mined illegally, he concluded.
On April 9, six laborers were killed and a seventh injured as part of a coal mine collapsed in Dara-i-Suf Payan district. (Pajhwok)
