Soften Stance on Dialogue with Kabul, Taliban Asked

PESHAWAR - A rightwing Pakistani politician has asked the Taliban to soften their stance on talks with the Afghan government.
The call was issued by Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUI-S) leader Maulana Hamidul Haq, son of Maulana Samiul Haq who was widely respected by the Taliban.
Samiul Haq was assassinated last year at his residence in a high-security neighbourhood of Islamabad. Following the cleric’s death, his son was made the party’s acting chief.
Speaking at an event in Bannu district on Monday, Haq urged the militant group to tone down their stance on the participation of the Afghan government in the ongoing peace talks.
Negotiations were the only way to end the 17-year-old conflict in Afghanistan, explained the former senator, who also hit out the Pakistan government’s failure to arrest the killers of his father.
On Monday, the Taliban announced resuming talks with US special envoy for reconciliation in Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad in Doha, Qatar’s capital. (Pajwhok)
