Iran, India to Discuss Operationalisation of Chabahar Port

KABUL - Indian and Iranian foreign ministers will meet next week for consultations on the current situation in Afghanistan and making the Chabahar port functional, says a media report.
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif will pay an official visit to India from January 7 to 9 for talks with External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, an Indian newspaper reported.
Besides calling on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Zarif would also meet Indian Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, the Statesman said. The visit is taking place days after India took over operations at the Chabahar port.
In response to Indi’s request, the Trump administration recently exempted the port project from the sanctions the US has re-imposed on Iran. The exemption also allows work on an attached railway project and Iranian petroleum shipments to Afghanistan.
During Zarif’s last visit to India in May 2018, the two countries had promised strengthening bilateral trade ties. He will be accompanied by a business delegation. (Pajhwok)
